Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion

 

This is the ministry of bringing the sacrament of the Body and Blood of Christ to the People of God. It is also the ministry of witnessing to the faith in the real presence of Christ in the action of sharing in the Eucharistic meal of Christ’s sacrifice.The ministry is more than a functional ministry of distribution. What the minister offers to Christ in that very act, by which Christ gives of himself to his sisters and brothers, is a personal presence. The ritual instruction at the installation of acolytes captures the fullness of this ministry and the proper faith and human affection that should attend it. “In performing your ministry, bear in mind that, as you share the one bread with your brothers and sisters, so you form one body with them. Show a sincere love for Christ’s Mystical Body, God’s holy people, and especially for the weak and the sick. Be obedient to the commandment which the Lord gave to his apostles at the Last Supper, “Love one another as I also have loved you.”
